Native Hebridean Sheep
Hebridean Sheep possibly descended from Viking Stock; which evolved centuries ago in the Western Isles of Scotland.
Their lustrous black wool makes hard-wearing articles - traces of similar wool have been found in ancient Island burial chambers.
As with Highland Cattle, their grazing preferences give them an unrivalled ability in sustaining delicate ecosystems.
Celtic Traditions: The Carmina Gadelica
The volumes of Gaelic Folklore, 'Carmina Gadelica' which Alexander Carmichael collected between 1855 and 1899 provide evocative insights into the relationship between the crofters of old, their animals and their land.
The collection of prayers and charms for blessings on the beasts, on whose safety and welfare that of their owners depended, tell us much about the ancient animal husbandry and of the importance of the relationships between ourselves and our environment.
About the Isle of Mull Weavers
The original Isle of Mull Weavers was founded by Bob and Kathy Ryan in 1987, and when they decided to retire in 2003 Bob helped us to move the 1920's and 1950's looms to Ardalanish.
Working in this Hebridean landscape, using the natural black and brown wool of our own Hebridean sheep seemed like the most logical thing to do, and so a new chapter began for the Isle of Mull Weavers.
